DESCRIPTION:THE KODIAK MARINE DEBRIS REMOVAL, RECYCLING AND RECOVERY PROJECT IS A CONTINUATION AND EXPANSION OF ISLAND TRAILS NETWORKS (ITN) EFFORTS TO REMOVE PLASTICS AND OTHER MARINE DEBRIS FROM CIRCULATION. THIS PROJECT WILL HELP THE GRANTEE EXPAND THEIR CAPACITY FOR SORTING AND RECYCLING MARINE DEBRIS, THUS DIVERTING APPROXIMATELY 90% OF THIS WASTE STREAM FROM LANDFILLS.ACTIVITIES:ITN WILL START THIS PROJECT BY COMPLETING A THIRD OF THEIR DIRECT CLEANUP EFFORTS AND WORK TOWARDS ESTABLISHING THEIR SORTING PROCESS WITH PROJECT AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS. CLEANUP EFFORTS WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WITH THE MAJORITY HAPPENING DURING THEIR SUMMER SEASON THROUGH VESSEL CLEANUP PROJECTS. A SYSTEM WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR SORTING DEBRIS AS IT ARRIVES, AND OVERALL DOCK WORKFLOW WILL BE ESTABLISHED. INFRASTRUCTURE WILL BE PREPARED FOR PLACEMENT OF THE SHREDDING MACHINE. ONCE SORTING AND RECYCLING SYSTEMS ARE ESTABLISHED, ITN WILL COMPLETE THE REMAINDER OF ITS MARINE DEBRIS REMOVAL WITH A SYSTEM THAT GOES FROM BOAT/BARGE TO SORTING AND PROCESSING BEFORE SHIPMENT TO RECYCLING FACILITY. SUBRECIPIENT:NO SUBAWARDS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ASSISTANCE AGREEMENT.OUTCOMES:EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE APPROXIMATELY 100,000 POUNDS OF MARINE DEBRIS REMOVED, REDUCED MORTALITY TO MARINE MAMMALS, FISHES, AND SEABIRDS KNOWN TO INGEST MARINE DEBRIS, AND RESTORATION OF KEYSTONE SPECIES AND ECOSYSTEMS THAT PROVIDE IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES. THE GOAL IS FOR 90-95% OF THE MATERIALS RECOVERED AND RECYCLED, WITH ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT LANDFILLED. SORTATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS REMOVED WILL PROVIDE IMPROVED DATA ON THIS POORLY UNDERSTOOD WASTE STREAM. LONG-TERM OUTCOMES INCLUDE REDUCED ENTANGLEMENT AND INGESTION OF MARINE DEBRIS BY WILDLIFE, IMPROVED WATER QUALITY, IMPROVED HUMAN HEALTH AND A LOCAL BLUE ECONOMY WORKFORCE, WHILE PRODUCING A MARKETABLE PRODUCT.
