This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to American GNC Corporation for the "Real-Time Integrated Navigation System for Planetary Exploration" (RT-INSPEX) project. The $124,998 firm-fixed-price contract is focused on developing an autonomous navigation solution for planetary rovers and other mobile robots that can operate without access to global navigation satellite systems. The proposed technology aims to provide...
This federal contract award to American GNC Corporation, a small disadvantaged business, was made by the Shared Services Center (SSC) of NASA to support the agency's efforts in enhancing robotic autonomy and off-loading work from operators and astronauts. The company has developed the "Real-Time Integrated Navigation System for Planetary Exploration" (RT-INSPEX) to provide autonomous navigation with GNSS-free localization, terrain awareness, and mapping capabilities for robotic...
This firm-fixed-price contract was awarded by NASA's Langley Research Center to Astrobotic Technology Inc., a Pittsburgh-based company, to deliver a Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) and Visual Velocimetry (VV) sensor product for lunar lander missions. The work aims to develop a commercial TRN system consisting of the sensor, a lunar simulator, and a lunar map generator. The $7,973,959 contract supports demonstrating the TRL 9 TRN sensor on a lunar lander mission, enabling precise landing within...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded Applanix Corporation a $98,591.50 firm-fixed-price purchase order contract to deliver POS AVX210 GNSS-inertial solutions for efficient, high-accuracy mapping. The contract was awarded non-competitively based on a determination that Applanix, a subsidiary of Trimble Inc., is the sole-source provider of the specified positioning and orientation systems. Work will be performed in Ottawa, Canada between June 28, 2023 and August 23,...
This is a $129,997 firm fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Voxtel, LLC, a small business manufacturer of specialized optics and electronics. The objective is to develop a highly sensitive 640x480-element flash LADAR (laser detection and ranging) camera capable of 100 Hz update rates and 5 cm range precision. The camera will leverage Voxtel's proven readout integrated circuit and avalanche...
This is a $124,829 firm-fixed-price SBIR Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Advanced Scientific Concepts, Inc., a small business manufacturer located in Santa Barbara, CA. The contract is for the development of a miniaturized 3D flash LIDAR sensor to enable safe autonomous landing and hazard avoidance capabilities for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in national airspace. This sensor technology is an extension of the 3D flash LIDAR used in NASA's ALHAT system for autonomous lunar...
This is a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by NASA to Irvine Sensors Corporation, a small business prime contractor. The contract, valued at $748,360, is for the design and development of a flight prototype of an eye-safe 3D LIDAR sensor system for use on unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The sensor, called the Active Continuous Awareness Surveillance System (ACASS), will detect nearby aircraft and enable avoidance maneuvers, providing a detect-and-avoid...
This federal contract award to Irvine Sensors Corporation supports the design of an advanced 3D LIDAR receiver system. The objective is to enable low Size, Weight, and Power (SWAP) LIDAR systems with significantly increased numbers of detectors, allowing 3D imagery to be obtained over large areas with high resolution, sensitivity, dynamic range, and sample rates. This will support accurate robotic operations under uncertain conditions. The $124,929 firm-fixed-price contract was awarded by the...
This is a $493,544.29 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Georgia Institute of Technology Research Corporation (Georgia Tech Research Corp), doing business as the Office of Sponsored Programs, to develop and test theories and algorithms for the inspection, geometric reconstruction, and tracking of a small celestial body, such as an asteroid, using various sensor modalities including passive cameras and active time-of-flight 3D sensors. The objective...
This federal contract award is for the procurement of 6-10 flight units and a similar number of engineering units of compact, lightweight, and low-power camera systems capable of imaging terrain hazards on the lunar surface for a lunar rover mission led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center. The award, valued at $6,402,059.93, was made to Micro-Cameras & Space Exploration S.A., a for-profit limited liability company based in Switzerland. The cameras...

THE PROPOSED SOLUTION EXPLOITS RECENT ADVANCES IN COMPUTER VISION TO CONCEIVE OF A SINGLE CAMERA GYRO ACCELEROMETER VISION BASED NAVIGATION SOLUTION SUCH THAT THE PROCESSING WILL BE LIGHTWEIGHT (REQUIRING ONLY A SINGLE OPTICAL FLOW SAMPLE PER FRAME). KNOWN LANDMARKS (NATURAL OR ARTIFICIAL) WILL HAVE ABSOLUTE POSITIONS KNOWN TO PLANETARY EXPLORATION WORKER ROBOTS. THE WORKER ROBOT CAN IDENTIFY IT'S ABSOLUTE POSITION BY OBSERVING KNOWN LANDMARK FEATURES AND DERIVING RANGE FROM THE RAW ATTITUDE SENSOR DATA AND THE VIDEO STREAM. BY OBSERVING ONE OR MORE LANDMARK FEATURES DURING CAMERA MOTION, THE POSITION UNCERTAINTY OF THE RANGE AND BEARING FROM THE VEHICLE CAN BE ESTIMATED. EACH RANGE BEARING MEASUREMENT TO KNOWN LANDMARKS ACTS AS A CONSTRAINT FOR THE CAMERA POSITION IN THE LANDMARK NAVIGATION SPACE (WHICH MAY BE ARBITRARILY DEFINED AND NOT ORIENTED THE SAME AS THE GLOBAL NAVIGATION FRAME). COMBINING THE WORKER'S ROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF IT'S OWN POSITION CAN FURTHER REDUCE THE POSITION ERROR ESTIMATES.
