About this award
This is a $129,552 grant awarded by NASA to the University of Wisconsin - Madison, operating as the Research and Sponsored Programs division of the University of Wisconsin System. The grant is for the "Seasonal Prediction of HKH Hydrological Extremes with the South Asia Land Data Assimilation System" project. The main tasks include managing the University of Wisconsin portion of the project, developing and adapting "serious game" simulations, and traveling to the Hindu Kush Himalayan region for data gathering and game administration. The goal is to involve various stakeholders in the region through interactive simulations to illustrate concepts of probability, uncertainty, and decision-making in the context of hydro-climatological seasonal forecasts. This grant was competitively selected under NASA's SERVIR solicitation and does not have a set-aside designation. The University of Wisconsin System has a history of serving as both a prime contractor and subcontractor on various federal contracts and grants, including work for agencies like the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and National Science Foundation.
Description
Seasonal prediction of HKH hydrological extremes with the south asia land data assimilation system the main tasks to be completed by the CO-PI includes managing the UW portion of the project competitively selected under NASA solicitation NNH15ZDA001N-servir, developing and adapting . Serious game" simulations, and traveling to the hindu kush himalayan region for data gathering and game administration. Additionally the CO-PI will advise a graduate research assistant with a critical role in the project. The games will involve various stakeholders from the HKH region; the PI will lead them through simulations to illustrate the concepts of probability, ~certainty, and decisionmaking in the context of hydro-climatological seasonal forecasts. These interactive serious games will be played at icimod headquarters in nepal and involve both individual and group decision-making. The serious games range from board and dice games to simulations on the computer.
