About this award
This is a $5,174,688.48 grant awarded by NASA to The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to provide a U.S. contribution to the Wide Field Imager (WFI) instrument for the European Space Agency's (ESA) ATHENA X-ray astronomy mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2028. The award supports hardware and software development for on-board high-level analysis of the WFI science data stream, as well as ASIC design and testing efforts, to assist the WFI team's design work leading up to ATHENA's mission adoption by ESA in 2020. This grant does not have a set-aside designation and runs through April 27, 2022.
Description
The next facility-class x-RAY astronomy observatory will be ESA's athena mission, to be launched in 2028. One of the core athena instruments, the wide field imager (WFI), is designed to conduct sensitive observations of both bright and faint x-RAY sources using a wide field of view and a new type of device known as a depfet (depleted p-channel field effect transistor) detector. We propose to provide a US contribution to the WFI instrument, consisting of hardware and software designed to perform on-board high-level analysis of the science data stream, plus asic design and testing efforts. In this proposal we seek funds to develop these contributions through FY2019, in support of the WFI team's design efforts leading to mission adoption at ESA (CY2020).
