Description
This proposal seeks funding to be awarded to students enrolled at US institutions to cover part of their expenses to attend the 2016 v. M. Goldschmidt conference in yokohama, japan (june 27-july 1, 2016). As the premier international geochemical conference, the goldschmidt conference plays a critical role in introducing young researchers to the world of geochemistry beyond their home institutions. This international geochemistry conference will provide an excellent opportunity for young geochemists to share their research with the scientific community, learn about cutting edge research taking place around the world, and interact with senior scientists specializing in their specific field of interest. Thematic issues to be addressed at the conference span a broad range of subdisciplines in low- and high- temperature geochemistry relevant to NASA research goals, including several sessions on cosmochemistry, planetary science, evolution of the early earth, the solar system, climate, ocean chemistry, dynamics of deep earth and planetary materials, evolution of life, astrobiology and more. The full program can be found on the goldschmidt 2016 website (http:// goldschmidt .info/2016/program/programviewthemes). In addition to oral and poster presentation sessions, students and early career scientists will have an opportunity to participate in a newly instituted mentoring program, field trips, professional development workshops as well as short courses. More information on the mentoring program can be found on the conference website (http:// goldschmidt.info/2016/mentoring). The requested funds will cover part of the expenses related to student travel and participation at the meeting. International scientific meetings are the primary networking outlet for researchers of all experience levels. For students, these meetings are often the first opportunity to interact with members of the international scientific community. The lingering effects of such an international learning and networking experience can be life changing for a student struggling to gain a foothold in the scientific community. The proposed student travel support program will enable more students from the US and US territories, to participate in this important meeting.
