About this award
This federal contract award, valued at $438,576.00, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Center for Severe Weather Research Inc. (CSWR), a non-profit organization. The purpose of the award is to improve the understanding and predictability of tornadic supercell thunderstorms through the assimilation of high-resolution satellite observations.
The contract seeks to address key gaps in the current understanding of tornado formation and maintenance, which are partly due to a lack of detailed thermodynamic, microphysical, and wind shear observations within storms and the surrounding environment. The award will allow CSWR to leverage its expertise in mobile weather data collection to fill these observational gaps and advance the science of tornado forecasting. This contract is not associated with any set-aside designation.
Description
Despite all we have learned about the fine-scale structure and evolution of supercell thunderstorms from idealized simulations and detailed ground-based observations, we still do not completely understand the processes of tornado formation and maintenance, nor are we able to directly predict them using current operational models. These uncertainties are partly due to lacking thermodynamic and microphysical observations aloft within the storm, lacking observations of vertical wind shear in the near storm environment, and imperfect model parameterizations of microphysical, turbulence, and other convective-scale processes. Satellite observations have the ability to fill in some of these observation gaps, particularly aloft and in areas of the environment located far from routine upper air observations and weather service radar coverage. However, satellite observations rarely are used to directly study or forecast tornadic supercell storms.
