Description

We seek to use the mimi cluster of instruments on the cassini spacecraft to continue our investigation of energetic ION characteristics within the saturnian magnetosphere. We will continue our construction of the observed convection pattern and determine how convection varies with local time, distance, season, and latitude. Our recent work shows that the degree of corotation of plasma within the magnetospheres of jupiter and saturn decreases with increasing distance from the respective planets in a remarkably similar manner, when scaled to the nominal magnetopause standoff distance. Current models predict the presence of a reconnection x-line associated with internal vasyliunas-cycle reconnection in the magnetotail and perhaps a dungey-cycle reconnection x-line on the dawn flank of saturn's magnetotail. The inca instrument is very sensitive, can differentiate between oxygen and hydrogen ions and can be used with other instruments in the mimi cluster to explore such structures. Convective signatures associated with x-line configurations will be well sensed and analyzed by this instrument cluster. Plasma layers in the dawn-prenoon region associated with return flow from these 2 different reconnection regions, if present, could be differentiated using compositional and spectral information gathered from these instruments. We will therefore use these instruments with the support of magnetic field data when necessary for pitch angle information to investigate the convective signatures of the configuration of the outer magnetosphere and the overall transport of plasma within the system. Given these goals, this investigation will meet the objective of the cassini data analysis program and NASA that seeks enhance the scientific return of the cassini mission by broadening the scientific analysis and interpretation of cassini data.
