About this award
This is a $295,900.00 grant for research awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Armstrong Flight Research Center to Orbital Medicine, Inc. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to develop and test a thoracic drainage device with a 2-phase separator that could be used to treat medical or traumatic injuries in the microgravity environment of space. The three key objectives are to validate the design of the 2-phase microgravity separator, validate the device's function in microgravity, and advance the technology readiness level from 5 to 6. This work is intended to culminate in a demonstration of the device's ability to operate as a medical suction unit in microgravity, with flight data and video capturing the function of the 2-phase separator and the quantity of blood simulant trapped. There is no set-aside designation for this contract, and the ultimate completion date is February 28, 2018.
Description
Evolved medical microgravity suction device the purpose of this cooperative agreement is to conduct a shared resource project that will lead to the testing of a thoracic drainage device with a 2-phase separator that could be used for treating medical or traumatic injuries that occur in the microgravity environment. This cooperative agreement will advance the technology developments and research which will be performed on future microgravity and space environment missions. The three specific objectives are to: 1) validate the design of the 2-phase microgravity separator 2) validate the function of the device in the microgravity environment 3) advance the current TRL level of the device from TRL level 5 to TRL level 6 this work will culminate in the demonstration of the ability of the thoracic drainage device to operate as a medical suction unit in microgravity. Flight data and video should capture the function of the 2-phase separator, and measurement of the quantity of blood simulant trapped by the device.
