About this award
This federal contract award, with an ID of NNX17AF78G, was granted by the Shared Services Center to The University of Iowa on February 7, 2017. The $363,192.00 grant is for a research project that will (1) generate synthetic spectral climate data, (2) compare and analyze dust emission information content, (3) use decadal data to recover dust emissions through inverse modeling, and (4) perform sensitivity and case studies on key questions related to the application of spectral climate signals for recovering dust emissions.
The University of Iowa, a major public research university, is the prime contractor for this grant. The contract does not have a set-aside designation. The research is part of the "Sensitivity Analysis and Recovery of Dust Emissions from Spectral Climate Signals" major program. The University of Iowa has a history of federal contract and grant awards, including work with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Indian Health Service.
Description
As detailed in the attached original proposal, this project will (1) generate synthetic spectral climate data in the shortwave and thermal IR spectra by integrating the geos-chem model with the unified linearized vector radiative transfer model (UNL-vrtm). (2) compare and analyze dust emission information content within synthetic data and data from gome, sciamachy, airs, and iasi. (3) use decadal data from gome, sciamachy, airs, and iasi to recover dust emissions through adjoint-based inverse modeling. (4) perform sensitivity and case studies on key questions (such as retrieve-then-average versus average-then-retrieve, and effects of retrieval bias and dust radiative feedbacks) in the application of spectral climate signals for recovering dust emissions.
