About this award
This is a grant awarded by the Shared Services Center, a civilian federal agency, to the Seti Institute, a non-profit scientific organization. The $122,063 grant is for a research project titled "Analysis of Saturn's Rings Dark Material from VIMS Data." The goal is to analyze the spectral signature of the non-icy materials in Saturn's rings and perform a comparative analysis of these components as a function of distance from the planet. The research aims to contribute to the inventory of materials in the Saturn system and enhance the scientific return of the Cassini mission. This grant does not have a set-aside designation. The Seti Institute is a prime contractor that often receives federal contracts and grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation to conduct research in astrobiology, planetary science, and astronomy.
Description
The redness of the rings remains a mystery; IT is variously ascribed to oxidized iron, or to organics (see cuzzi ET AL 2010). These very different materials carry implications for the origin of the rings, their relationship, and evolution. We propose to: a) analyze the spectral signature of the non-ICY material(s) that contribute to the composition of the rings of saturn in vims spectra, and b) perform a comparative analysis of the signatures of the non-ICY components of the rings to be performed as a function of distance from saturn. The hydrocarbon bands characterizing the organic material will be extracted following a technique stemming from the one tuned and calibrated with the study of iapetus, phoebe, and hyperion (dalle ORE ET AL. 2012). The obtained hydrocarbon spectra will contribute to the inventory of materials in the saturn system. They will be compared to spectra of other sources in the solar system, as well as the interstellar medium (ISM), and the laboratory tracing the origin and evolution of the material in the saturn system and enhancing the scientific return of the cassini mission , the main goal of the cdaps program.
