About this award

This $205,250.15 contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Maryland, College Park to refine methods for ground finding and canopy/ground reflectance estimation to support the upcoming Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission. The contract aims to integrate airborne and terrestrial laser scanning datasets captured during the AFRISAR campaign to improve height and profile metric products for global applications. The research will be led by Dr. John Armston and Dr. Steven Hancock. This contract is not associated with a set-aside designation.

Description

The afrisar campaign was completed in march 2016 to demonstrate the feasibility of aboveground biomass estimation over dense forests for the upcoming ESA biomass, NASA nisar and gedi missions. The gedi mission will produce height and profile metric products for global applications, and refined methods for ground finding and canopy/ground reflectance estimation are neede to minimize local calibration requirements. Afrisar data present a unique opportunity to refine our methods in high biomass forests with dense canopies, where the greatest uncertainties exist. UMD will integrate airborne and terrestrial laser scanning datasets that have been captured near-coincidentally with the afrisar data. These data will also provide new opportunities for the fusion of SAR and lvis/gedi measurements. DR. John armston and DR. Steven hancock of the university of maryland will undertake the proposed research. DR. Armston will lead the refinement of the canopy/ground reflectance method and DR. Hanckock will lead the refinement of the ground finding algorithm.
