About this award

This federal contract award to the Seti Institute, a non-profit scientific organization, is for a research project to study the spatial distribution of carbonate deposits in the Nili Fossae region of Mars using data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The $351,055 grant is funded by NASA's Planetary Science Division and will apply novel data analysis techniques to better understand the mineral associations and formation of the Nili Fossae carbonates. The award does not have a set-aside designation. As a prime contractor, the Seti Institute has held multiple NASA contracts and grants related to space exploration, astrobiology, and planetary science, leveraging its expertise in these areas to support the agency's research and technology development initiatives.

Description

We propose to study the spatial distribution of carbonate deposits in the nili fossae region of mars using compact reconnaissance imaging spectrometer for mars (crism) hyperspectral mapping measurements. This project will extend that correlation based technique into these three key questions of mineral associations in the eastern nili fossae carbonate suite. This project will use an absorption band mapping technique (brown, 2006) to determine the centroids, band widths, amplitudes and asymmetry of absorption bands. We will apply a novel correlation plot technique to summarize the variations in carbonate spectral band parameters and DIG deeper into formation questions surrounding the nili fossae carbonates and associated materials.
