About this award

This federal contract award, with the ID NNX16AH80G, was granted by the Shared Services Center (an alternate name for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA) to The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF SUNY), doing business as Stony Brook University, for a grant project titled "Effects of Space Flights on the Proteome of Astronauts' Plasma." The $331,916.00 grant supports research to improve understanding of molecular changes that influence immunological conditions associated with increased health risks for astronauts exposed to space radiation, microgravity, and physiological stress during space flights. The project will use proteomic technology to analyze plasma samples collected from astronauts before, during, and after space missions. This grant award does not have a set-aside designation and is set to be completed by December 31, 2025.

Description

Space flight results in exposure of astronauts to several stressors, (such as space radiation, microgravity, and physiological stress), that could exacerbate the risks of adverse health effects. To protect astronauts, we must improve our understanding of molecular changes that influence immunological conditions associated with increased astronaut health risks. In this flight definition project, we will use cutting age proteomic technology to determine protein alterations, qualitatively and quantitatively, in plasma samples collected from astronauts before, during, and after space flights.
