About this award

This is a $350,947.23 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The objective of the research is to provide guidance to the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) project to achieve the best possible measurements of ocean surface slope for applications in marine geophysics. The SWOT altimeter mission has the potential to significantly improve gravity accuracy and spatial resolution, which could lead to the discovery of tens of thousands of uncharted seamounts and improved understanding of ocean currents and deep-ocean mixing. This award does not have a set-aside designation, as Scripps is a large educational institution. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography has a long history of supporting federal agencies through diverse research and technology development activities, leveraging its specialized facilities, research vessels, and subject matter expertise across disciplines like oceanography, climate science, and geophysics.

Description

The objective of our research is to provide guidance to the surface water and ocean topography project to achieve the best possible measurements of ocean surface slope for applications in marine geophysics. The swot altimeter mission, with its smaller footprint and additional cross-track slope measurement, could improve the gravity accuracy by perhaps an order of magnitude and also improve spatial resolution on the shallow continental margins. The improved accuracy could reveal tens of thousands of uncharted seamounts as well as the fabric of the abyssal hills in the deep ocean. These small-scale bathymetry features impact ocean currents and deep-ocean mixing through the generation of internal waves.
