About this award
This federal contract award NNX16AD54G, with a ceiling value of $83,323.92, was granted by the NASA Shared Services Center to the University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL), a Hispanic Serving Institution and state-controlled institution of higher learning. The contract is for research to address two key challenges in applying Agile software development methods to large, mission-critical software systems: (1) defining the minimum set of required artifacts for independent verification and validation (IV&V), and (2) adapting traditional IV&V methodologies to Agile. This research aims to support NASA's adoption of Agile methods for spacecraft flight software projects. The contract has no set-aside designation and was awarded directly to UHCL, which has a history of federal contract and grant awards across a range of scientific research, STEM education, and community engagement initiatives.
Description
The agile family of software development processes is gaining in popularity, even in applications for which IT was not originally intended. Agile methods are being employed for large software systems and mission-critical systems, including some spacecraft flight software projects. The adoption of agile or agile-like methods presents two challenges from the perspective of IV & v. First, IT is necessary to clearly define what minimum set of artifacts (documentation, code, test results, for example) are needed to make IV & v possible. Second, IT is necessary adapt traditional IV & v methodologies to this new development approach. This research will address these two challenges using information from current and expected NASA software projects, agile literature, and IV & v methodologies.
