About this award

This is a $588,023 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAER Institute), a non-profit research organization. The grant is for a project titled "Observations and Modeling of the Impact of Flux Emergence on the Chromosphere and Beyond," which aims to study the effects of small-scale, weak magnetic flux on the dynamics and energetics of the solar chromosphere, transition region, and corona.

The project will utilize high-resolution observations from solar observatories like IRIS, Hinode, and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, combined with advanced numerical simulations, to investigate the nature of small-scale solar loops known as "UFS loops." This research is expected to elucidate the role of the continuous emergence of weak magnetic flux on the Sun's atmospheric structures and processes. The grant was awarded without a set-aside designation, reflecting BAER Institute's specialized capabilities in solar physics research and data analysis.

Description

Here we propose to exploit high resolution observations from iris, hinode, solar dynamics observatory SDO and the 1M swedish solar telescope SST, combined with advanced modeling of flux dispersal and the solar atmospheric response to determine the impact of the small scale, weak magnetic flux that continuously emerges onto the surface on the dynamics and energetics of the chromosphere, transition region and corona. We will employ flux tracking methods that were previously developed and trace the evolution of the granular scale flux in hinode and SST magnetograms and the interaction of this emerging flux with pre existing fields. In addition, we will carefully study the effects of the newly emerged flux on heating signatures derived from the myriad of iris photosspheric, chromospheric, and transition region diagnostics. We will also study the impact on coronal observables from SDO. We will compare our results with advanced numerical simulations, including reduced MHD data driven simulations and 3D radiative simulations. Finally, our results will elucidate the nature of the small scale loops so called UFS loops that were recently discovered with iris.
