About this award

This contract award to The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is for the design, development, and demonstration of a triple-pulsed 2-micron direct detection integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) lidar. The lidar system will measure the weighted-average column dry-air mixing ratios of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) from an airborne platform. This novel technique allows for the simultaneous and independent measurement of the two most dominant greenhouse gases using a single instrument, enabling new Earth observation capabilities while reducing size, cost, and development time. The contract, awarded by the Shared Services Center of an unnamed civilian federal agency, is a grant for research with a ceiling value of $127,081. The award does not use a set-aside designation. As a research university and frequent federal contractor, Penn State has supplied a range of goods and services to agencies including the Departments of Defense, Energy, Agriculture, Interior, and Health and Human Services.

Description

We propose to design, develop and demonstrate a triple-pulsed 2-?m direct detection integrated path differential absorption (ipda) lidar to measure the weighted-average column dry-air mixing ratios of carbon dioxide (XCO2) and water vapor (XH2O) from an airborne platform. This novel technique allows measurement of the two most dominant greenhouse gases simultaneously and independently using a single instrument. This enables new earth observation measurements and reduces risk, cost, size, volume, mass and development time of earth observing instruments.
