About this award
This is a $199,009.67 grant awarded by NASA to the University of California, Berkeley to create a dataset of solar flare ribbon positions and fluxes observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instruments. The goal is to compile a larger sample of flare-ribbon events to improve understanding of solar flares and eruptions. The grant is not set aside for small or disadvantaged businesses. As the parent organization, the State of California Controllers Office would administer any funding provided to UC Berkeley under this award.
Description
The launch of the helioseismic and magnetic imager (HMI) and the atmospheric imaging assembly (AIA), both aboard the solar dynamics observatory (SDO), presents a rare opportunity to compile a much larger sample of flare-ribbon events than could readily be assembled before. Here we propose to create a data set of both flare ribbon positions and fluxes, as a function of time, for all c-class or greater solar flares within 45 degrees of disk center observed by SDO. For this purpose, we will use vector magnetograms (2D magnetic field maps) from HMI and UV images from AIA.
