About this award

This is a $338,303.17 grant awarded by NASA to the University of Arizona, doing business as the Arizona Board of Regents, to analyze observations of the UV airglow emissions from Saturn's upper atmosphere using the Hubble Space Telescope's UVIS instrument. The analysis will investigate the structure of Saturn's thermosphere and constrain the hydrogen abundance and energy deposition processes. This research will also facilitate studies of Saturn's ionosphere, the interaction of the ring system with the upper atmosphere, and the supply of hydrogen to the Kronian magnetosphere. The grant does not have a set-aside designation. The University of Arizona has extensive capabilities in astrophysics, planetary science, and other technical disciplines, and often receives federal grants and contracts to support scientific research and analysis. The State of Arizona is the parent organization for the University and has also received various federal contracts and grants for services related to public health, transportation, and defense initiatives.

Description

Observations of the UV airglow emissions from saturn's will be analyzed to investigate the structure its upper atmosphere. Uvis has made extensive observations of h lyman alpha emissions and H2 electronic band emissions from saturn's disc, limb, and exosphere. Analysis of these emissions will constrain the h abundance and energy deposition processes in saturn's thermosphere thereby enabling investigation of the long-standing problem with understanding the high thermospheric temperatures on this planet. Analysis of these observations will also facilitate investigations of saturn's complex ionosphere, the interaction of the ring system with the upper atmosphere, and the supply of h to the kronian magnetosphere. The observations will be interpreted with state-of-the-art radiative transfer models for h lyman alpha and H2 lyman and werner band emissions.
