About this award

This is a $565,803 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Purdue University to develop a three-dimensional regolith evolution model. The purpose is to investigate age biases in post-Imbrian samples of the lunar regolith and to model the observed diffusion of material across lunar highlands and mare boundaries. The model will also be used to test theories for the observed young-age bias in the lunar impact glass record. This work is part of NASA's broader efforts to better understand biases in the lunar sample collection and regional-scale distributions of excavated and transported surface material. The grant does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

We propose to develop a three-dimensional regolith evolution model in order to investigate age biases in post-imbrian samples of the lunar regolith. We will use this model to investigate two sets of observations related to regolith evolution in the post basin forming epoch: 1) modeling the observed diffusion of material across highlands/mare boundaries, and 2) testing models for the observed young-age bias in the lunar impact glass record. With our regolith evolution model, we will be quantitatively constrain regional-scale distributions of surface material that has been excavated and transported by impacts. This will allow US to set constraints on the variability of the lunar impact rate during the eratosthenian and copernican periods as well as better understand the general nature of biases from the lunar sample collection.
