Description
This proposal requests support for the gordon research conference on visualization in science and education for 2015 and 2017. The support will allow additional participants to attend the conference, particularly graduate students and post docs, and IT will support an innovative mini-grant program that bring interdisciplinary teams of researchers together to pilot cutting-edge research in visualization. The gordon conference format promotes deep engagement of participants and the sharing of pre-publication research through an immersive residential conference experience at a small college. This format has proved very effective for the 75 year history of the gordon research conferences. This unique conference brings together specialists from a variety of fields to discuss and study the key ideas in making visualizations of data attractive and effective in communication to scientists, students and the general public. Given the widespread use of such visualizations across NASA, this is a critical topic for the agency and for the stem community as a whole. Advances in this area will support both better science and stronger educational efforts.
