About this award
This is a $25,243.47 grant awarded by the Shared Services Center, a civilian federal agency, to the University of Illinois to conduct research on extracting melt pond data from ICESat-2 satellite data. The two primary tasks are to extract melt pond data using two existing algorithms - the University of Maryland Melt Pond Algorithm and the Density Dimension Algorithm (DDA) - and track the surface and bathymetry of the melt ponds. This research grant does not have a set-aside designation and the ultimate completion date is May 28, 2026. The University of Illinois is a renowned public land-grant research institution that has significant experience executing federal contracts and grants across a wide range of disciplines, including aerospace, agriculture, and environmental science.
Description
The first objective is to glean information about melt ponds from icesat-2. This objective has two primary tasks. The first task is to extract melt pond data from the icesat-2 ATL03 data. Two algorithms exists for tracking melt ponds in the ATL03 photon cloud, the university of maryland melt pond algorithm [UMP-MPA, farrell ET AL., 2020, buckley ET AL., 2023] and the density dimension algorithm seaice-bifurcate [DDA, herzfeld ET AL., 2023]. Both algorithms have the ability to track two surfaces corresponding to the surface and bathymetry of the melt pond [buckley ET AL., 2023]. .
