About this award

This federal contract award, with ID 80NSSC25K7833, was granted to the Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines (doing business as Colorado School of Mines), a public research university focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The $624,065.00 grant is for research and development of a megawatt (MW)-scale high-voltage multiphase dual-rotor generator (DRG) integrated with a multiphase passive rectifier for a power management and distribution (PMAD) system in a nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) system.

The project aims to design and validate a proof-of-concept for this DRG and rectifier system, which would be used in an NEP system where a nuclear reactor spins the DRG and the output is rectified before connecting to the spacecraft's high-voltage DC (HVDC) bus. This research and development work is not associated with a larger contract vehicle and does not have a set-aside designation. As a prominent federal contractor and grantee, the Colorado School of Mines leverages its specialized technical expertise to support various civilian government agencies through complex research and development projects.

Description

This project proposes design and proof-of-concept validation via scalable laboratory prototyping of a megawatt (MW)-scale high-voltage multiphase dual-rotor generator (DRG) integrated with a multiphase passive rectifier for a power management and distribution (pmad) system in a nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) system. In the NEP under study a nuclear reactor through a closed brayton cycle acting as a prime mover spins a multiphase (greater than 3-phase) DRG whose output is rectified with a passive rectifier before connecting to spacecraft's high-voltage DC (hvdc) bus.
