About this award

This is a $122,650 grant awarded by the Shared Services Center to the SETI Institute, a non-profit scientific research organization, for a project to investigate the fragmentation of airbursting asteroids during atmospheric entry. The purpose is to provide ground truth to models describing this two-step fragmentation process, by studying the lightcurves and meteorite strewn fields of documented meteorite falls. The goal is to determine if this fragmentation behavior is common for small asteroid and meteoroid impacts, and whether it is diagnostic for the material strength and earlier fragmentation of different meteorite types. This grant does not utilize any set-aside designations. The SETI Institute has a history of performing technical support services for NASA's Office of Planetary Protection under federal contracts and delivering scientific research through grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Description

The purpose of this work is to provide ground truth to models describing the fragmentation of airbursting asteroids during atmospheric entry, by investigating from documented meteorite falls a newly identified two-step process of fragmentation that describes the energy deposition profile (bolide lightcurve) and the strewn field pattern of meteorites recovered on the ground. The work will study the lightcurves and meteorite strewn fields of some 70 camera-documented meteorite falls that have been recovered. The goal of the proposed work here is to investigate if this two-step fragmentation behavior is common for other small asteroid and meteoroid impacts (objects a few tens of CM up to 3-m diameter) and, if so, if that final disruption is diagnostic for the material strength and earlier fragmentation behavior of asteroids of different meteorite types.
