About this award

NASA awarded a $4.2 million grant to The Regents of the University of California, doing business as UC Berkeley, for research supporting the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) General Investigator Program. The award, issued on March 1, 2025, with completion scheduled for February 28, 2028, will support the acquisition and analysis of scientific data from the TESS mission, a NASA Explorer Mission launched in April 2018. The solicitation also welcomes proposals for ground-based telescope observations that directly support the analysis and interpretation of TESS scientific data. This non-set-aside grant was awarded competitively based on technical merit and represents continued investment in exoplanet research through NASA's civilian space exploration portfolio.

UC Berkeley, a premier public research institution and land-grant university, brings substantial expertise in space exploration and scientific research to this initiative. The university has a demonstrated track record of successfully managing large federal research grants and contracts across multiple agencies, including NASA, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense. The performance location for this award is Albany, California, and the institution will leverage its research capabilities and technical expertise to advance understanding of transiting exoplanets and support NASA's broader goals in planetary science and fundamental astrophysics.
