About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $70,000.00, was issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Trustees of Tufts College, also known as Tufts University, a private research university in Medford, Massachusetts. The purpose of the contract is to empirically validate theoretical estimates of the acoustic sound speed and attenuation for hydrogen/helium gas mixtures under conditions expected to be experienced by descent probes into the outer solar system gas giant planets, specifically Saturn. This relates to a potential future NASA New Frontiers class mission that may deliver a descent probe to Saturn, where a high priority science goal is to understand the helium mixing ratio. The contract does not have a set-aside designation, indicating it was competed on a full and open basis. The award is intended to support research that will help prepare for future NASA missions exploring the gas giant planets.

Description

The proposed work to be accomplished with this award is aimed at empirically validating theoretical estimates of the acoustic sound speed and attenuation for hydrogen/helium gas mixtures under conditions to be experienced by descent probes into the outer solar system gas giant planets, specifically saturn. This relates to NASA s missions in that a decadal survey high priority new frontiers class mission may be flown to deliver a descent probe to saturn. A high priority science goal of such a mission is to understand the helium mixing ratio on saturn. We believe that acoustic spectroscopy may yield that information, but before flying an instrument to conduct such a measurement, empirical validation of this phenomena needs to be done.
