About this award

This is a $399,467.00 grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Arizona State University (ASU) to fund a series of virtual and in-person planetary data training workshops over a 24-month period from July 2024 through June 2026. The workshops will focus on topics such as planetary data management, geographic information systems (GIS), image processing, and stereo photogrammetry. They will be open to the U.S. planetary science community, including students, postdocs, and established scientists. The workshops will be distributed geographically across the U.S. and include both virtual and in-person sessions to increase accessibility. This award is not a set-aside contract. ASU will serve as the prime recipient and organize the workshops through separate tasks and budgets, allowing NASA to potentially descope specific training if needed.

Description

The objective of this proposal is to fund a series of virtual & in-person planetary data training workshops during a 24-month period from july 2024 through june 2026, at our four institutions, as well as at two national meetings each year (e.g., geological society of america (GSA) connects meeting in the fall, and another relevant annual meeting or conference such as lpsc, to be determined in the spring or early-summer). These workshops, which are based on the strengths of each of our institutions, would focus on planetary data management, planetary geographic information systems (GIS) training (e.g., jmars, arcgis pro, and open source GIS), ISIS3 for image processing, and stereo photogrammetry (e.g., socet set and ames stereo pipeline for digital elevation model (DEM) production), and would be open to all members of the US planetary science community (and international scientists through virtual workshops). Our workshops are aimed at all career levels from undergraduate and graduate students to postdocs and early career scientists to established professional scientists. Rather than conduct a single, week-long event each year at a specific location and at a discrete time of the year, we are proposing to conduct a series of smaller, virtual and in-person workshops that would be distributed throughout the 12-month period each year, and would be distributed geographically across the united states to enable greater access. Both in-person and virtual workshops are included to further increase accessibility. Workshops are organized by institution as separate tasks and with separate budgets, so that NASA can descope specific training if funding is limited without non-selection of the whole proposal.
