About this award
This is a $91,868 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Inc. to support research related to interpreting in-situ solar wind observations. The proposed effort will employ a coronal and solar wind model to connect solar wind data from the Solar Orbiter (SOLO) and Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) missions to their sources on the Sun. This will help test solar wind formation mechanisms. The contract is not set-aside and runs from November 2024 to November 2025. As a premier private university specializing in aerospace and aviation, Embry-Riddle frequently conducts research and provides technical services to federal agencies like NASA under both contracts and grants.
Description
The proposed effort will employ the use of a coronal and solar wind model, which enables them to interpret in situ solar wind observations based on both the solar source (i.e. quiet sun or active regions at the magnetic open closed boundary, or sources sufficiently inside coronal holes), and model-derived parameters that are.proxies for how the solar wind was formed (e.g. squashing factor, coronal hole boundary distance, expansion factor). DR. Wallace will provide model output of the source regions of the solar wind observed at solar orbiter (solo), and for ACE during times when we have corresponding remote observations. These are cutting edge.tools for testing solar wind formation mechanisms. The use of a model such as WSA/adapt is required to connect in situ observations to their solar source.
