About this award
This is a $431,029.00 grant awarded by a civilian federal agency to The Leland Stanford Junior University, a private research university, for a research project focused on investigating the use of NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite data to estimate live fuel moisture content (LFMC) and understand plant responses to drought. The project will compare LFMC estimates derived from SMAP's L-band vegetation optical depth (VOD) to existing LFMC estimates from MODIS to elucidate the advantages of SMAP's greater canopy penetration relative to multispectral data. The award does not have a set-aside designation, indicating Stanford competed openly for this federal research grant. The grant was awarded on October 7, 2024, with a period of performance ending on October 6, 2027.
Description
Throughout, we will compare lfmc derived from (smap's) l-band VOD to existing lfmc estimates from modis, to investigate and elucidate the advantages of smap's greater canopy penetration relative to that of multispectral data. Taken together, we expect that the proposed work will significantly facilitate the use of smap data for understanding plant responses to drought. Given that the community's interest in remote sensing of lfmc and plant water potential is growing, our work would enable important and novel uses of the smap data in multiple areas.
