About this award
This is a $759,274 grant awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to conduct research related to the physical structure and impact cratering processes on the lunar surface in the Mare Humorum region. The research aims to gain new insights into lunar volcanism by analyzing small craters in this area, utilizing recent updates to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's rock abundance dataset. This grant does not have a set-aside designation, reflecting the University of Hawaii's status as a large educational institution with extensive expertise in astronomy, planetary science, and other related fields. The University of Hawaii has a long history of receiving federal grants and contracts from agencies such as NASA, NOAA, and the Department of Defense for a wide range of research projects.
Description
Mare humorum hosts numerous small craters (< 10 KM diameter), which provide an excellent opportunity to probe the physical structure of the near-surface volcanic materials and to gain new insight into both the impact cratering process and lunar volcanism. Recent updates to the rock abundance (RA) dataset, which includes the full temporal range of the lunar reconnaissance orbiter diviner [1], have revealed nuances in the distribution of 1 m and larger rocks in mare humorum. The surface, in general, is peppered with small rocky craters. Most of humorum's craters have a rock abundance signature in the ejecta [2] however, many large craters on mare humorum feature rock-poor halos. Radar-dark halo craters previously identified in mare humorum [3] also have rock-poor halos in RA. Small superimposed craters may be the key to understanding evolution and formation processes.
