About this award
NASA awarded an $800,000 research grant to Ecoexploratorio, Inc., a non-profit science museum and community development corporation based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to establish the Innovative Space Learning Activities (ISLA) Center: Living on and Beyond Earth. The award, issued June 1, 2024, under solicitation 23-TEAMIIFULL-0022, is part of NASA's TEAM II (NASA TEAM II) program, which supports innovative educational initiatives focused on space science engagement. The grant carries no set-aside designation and includes a performance period extending through May 31, 2027. Ecoexploratorio will operate the ISLA Center from its San Juan location, leveraging its expertise in STEM education and outreach to underserved communities.
The ISLA Center project aligns with Ecoexploratorio's established mission of providing science and technology education with particular emphasis on engaging Hispanic/Latino and low-income student populations in Puerto Rico. This award represents a continuation of the organization's collaborative relationship with NASA, building on prior successful initiatives such as the OCEANOS project, which focused on ocean science education using NASA Earth observation data. The ISLA Center will contribute to NASA's broader educational objectives by delivering innovative space learning activities and fostering community engagement around space exploration and scientific discovery, positioning the organization as a regional hub for space-related STEM education in the Caribbean.
