About this award

This federal contract award was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Trustees of Boston University, a private university located in Boston, Massachusetts. The $75,000.00 grant will fund a research project to monitor 4-band (BVRI) optical linear polarization and flux of 55 gamma-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN) over 8-10 nights per month at the 1.83m Perkins Telescope in Flagstaff, Arizona. The goal is to build a database of polarization behavior during quiescent and flaring gamma-ray states, which will lead to insights into particle acceleration mechanisms, locations of gamma-ray emission sites, and magnetic field structures in AGN. The contract does not have a set-aside designation and runs through September 30, 2025. As a research university, Boston University has a history of receiving federal grants and contracts from agencies like NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation to advance scientific discovery and education across various disciplines.

Description

We propose to monitor 4-band (bvri) optical linear polarization and flux of 55 gamma-RAY AGN 8-10 nights per month at the 1.83M perkins telescope (flagstaff, AZ) operated by boston university to build a database of polarization behavior during quiescent and flaring gamma-RAY states. We will construct gamma-RAY and optical light curves and polarization curves to search for correlations between gamma-RAY and optical flux, polarization, and spectral index variations. The polarization will reveal magnetic field properties in optical emission regions at different gamma-RAY activity states. New sources will be added to the sample based on fermi, VHE, and neutrino s. The data set will lead to important insights into particle acceleration mechanisms, locations of gamma-RAY emission sites, and magnetic field structures in AGN.
