About this award

This is a $45,000.00 federal grant award from the NASA Shared Services Center to The Geochemical Society, a non-profit organization, to support student and post-doctoral scholar participation in the annual Goldschmidt Conference on geochemistry and cosmochemistry. The grant will cover expenses related to travel and conference participation, enabling young researchers to share their work, learn about cutting-edge research, and interact with senior scientists in their fields. The Goldschmidt Conference is the premier international meeting on geochemistry and cosmochemistry, and this grant aligns with NASA's research goals in areas such as planetary science, evolution of the early Earth, and astrobiology. This award does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

This proposal seeks support for student and post-doctoral scholar participation in the annual goldschmidt conference. As the premier international conference on geochemistry and cosmochemistry, the goldschmidt conference plays a critical role in introducing young researchers to the world of geochemistry beyond their home institutions. This international meeting will provide an excellent opportunity for young geochemists to share their research with the scientific community, learn about cutting edge research taking place around the world, and interact with senior scientists specializing in their specific fields of interest. Thematic issues to be addressed at the conference span a broad range of sub-disciplines in low- and high- temperature geochemistry relevant to NASA research goals, including several sessions on cosmochemistry, planetary science, evolution of the early earth, the solar system, planetary materials, evolution of life, astrobiology, and more. The full program for the 2023 conference. Students and early career scientists have access to a wide array of opportunities during the conference, including oral and poster sessions, a mentoring program, professional development workshops, and scientific short courses. The requested funds will cover part of the expenses related to student and post-DOC travel and participation at the meeting. International scientific meetings are the primary networking outlet for researchers of all experience levels. For students and post-docs, conferences like goldschmidt are often the first opportunity to interact with members of the international scientific community. They can receive feedback on their research, form new collaborations, and discover ways to gain a foothold in the scientific community. The proposed student/post-DOC travel support program will enable more young planetary scientists from the US and US territories to participate in this important meeting. The geochemical society is requesting funds to support early career researchers at the 2023 (lyon, france), 2024 (chicago, illinois), and 2025 (prague, czech republic) conferences.
