About this award

This is a $10,071.87 grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Maryland, College Park to conduct research on neutron star parameter inference. The proposed work will incorporate physical effects to provide more accurate measurements of neutron star mass and radius. Additionally, the research will employ machine learning techniques to improve computational efficiency in these analyses. This grant does not have a set-aside designation and is part of the University of Maryland's broader portfolio of federal contracts and grants, which includes work for agencies like the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, and National Science Foundation. The University of Maryland is a state-controlled institution of higher learning that conducts a range of research and educational activities under the University System of Maryland.

Description

The proposed work will, for the first time, incorporate self-consistently all the related physical effects (afforded by the g-RAY data), providing physically justified magnetic field structures, hot spots, and probably more accurate measurements of m*, r* values with fewer free parameters. Our studies will also employ the promising machine learning technique trained on our physical models, which has the potential to revolutionize the computational efficiency of NS parameter inferences. Even though the deliverables of the proposed study do not hinge on the novel machine learning approach, a successful outcome would establish a revolutionary new pathway for similar studies.
