About this award

This is a $412,820 grant awarded to the Catholic University of America (CUA) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to conduct research on extracting the true response of geomagnetic indices by correcting for uncertainties in solar wind drivers. The research aims to enhance the understanding of the connections between solar variability and Earth's space environment, with the goal of improving the capability to predict extreme space weather conditions.

The award is not associated with a larger contract vehicle, and there is no set-aside designation. CUA has a history of providing scientific research, educational services, and technical expertise to federal agencies, particularly in space science, physics, and atmospheric research. The university frequently collaborates with other research institutions through sub-grant arrangements to enhance its research capabilities.

Description

To our knowledge, this is the first work that attempts to extract the true response of geomagnetic indices by correcting the effects of uncertainty in the solar wind driver. In addition, this study will use a comprehensive database and cover as many of the solar wind parameters as possible. Unlike previous studies, the study implements an MHD model to quantify uncertainty in the drivers that are not accessible using measurements. The work will be highly impactful for past and future studies of extreme space weather events and their effects on earth. Our proposed work is in line with the goals of the 2013 decadal survey: to understand 'the connections between solar variability and earth and planetary space environment.' IT RE-evaluates our understanding of the above connection and will significantly impact our capability to accurately 'predict extreme conditions in space to protect life and society, and to safeguard human and robotic explorers beyond earth.'
