About this award
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $615,271.00 grant to the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to conduct the PICOGRAM project. PICOGRAM aims to classify shallow marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, using remote sensing data and in-situ measurements. This data fusion approach is intended to enhance the assessment and monitoring of global coral reef systems and support coral reef management efforts in regions like Guam. The grant aligns with the mission of the Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center to inform adaptation strategies for critical habitats. No set-aside designation was mentioned for this award.
Description
As coral reefs face immediate, mounting threats (e.g., increased sea surface temperatures, overharvesting of reef fish, invasive species) there is an urgent need for projects such as picogram to effectively assimilate multimodal datasets to form a clear picture of present and past coral reef ecosystem composition, extent, rugosity, and health at local and global scales. Picogram presents an ambitious global effort to classify shallow marine ecosystems using multiple remote sensing datasets and in-situ data. Such data-fusion techniques have the potential to substantially enhance our ability to assess global coral reef systems and understand their change over time. Picogram data products that reveal coral reef status over time are vital to guam. Having classified 3D maps are much needed tools for coral reef managers because understanding, particularly visualizing, changes over time may allow for better identification, prioritization, and protection of critical areas. This project also directly supports coral reef research conducted by the university of guam marine laboratory and GIS and remote sensing work at the water and environmental research institute. With the likelihood of increased bleaching events, this work aligns with one of the pacific islands climate adaptation science center mission goals for guam informing adaptation of high value critical habitats, such as coral reef ecosystems.
