About this award
This $43,177.02 grant awarded to George Mason University by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) supports scientific research to study the structure and dynamics of plasma and magnetic fields at the sources of the solar wind, as well as mechanisms that accelerate and transport energetic particles. It addresses objectives of the Parker Solar Probe and STEREO missions, as well as key science goals from the Decadal Survey. The research combines in-situ measurements from the Parker Solar Probe with remote sensing observations from multiple observatories, providing an unprecedented opportunity to characterize pre- and post-coronal mass ejection outflows close to the Sun. This grant does not utilize any set-aside designations.
Description
This project addresses two of the goals of the parker solar probe mission, e.g. "determine the structure and dynamics of the plasma and magnetic fields at the sources of the solar wind" and "explore mechanisms that accelerate and transport energetic particles". IT addresses the following scientific objective of stereo: "characterize the propagation of cmes through the heliosphere". Plus, IT addresses the decadal survey's key science goal 1 ("determine the origins of the sun's activity and predict the variations in the space environment"). The combination of PSP and stereo data offers an unprecedented opportunity for this investigation. We can combine in situ measurements of the pre- and post-flows with remote sensing observations from two (or more) observatories for the first time. To our knowledge, pre- and post-CME outflows have never been addressed so close to the sun, and their properties are unknown. Previously we had mostly in situ observations at 1 AU, where the two phenomena we are interested in could only be observed by remote sensing.
