About this award
This is a $518,744 grant award to Trustees of Boston University by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to conduct research on plasma and magnetic field conditions that influence whistler-mode wave growth in the Earth's magnetosphere. The goal is to address three key science questions related to how cold plasma, hot plasma, and magnetic field modulations affect whistler-mode wave growth, and in what solar wind and geomagnetic conditions these parameters become important. This fundamental research is relevant to NASA's Heliophysics Research Program, which explores and characterizes physical processes in the space environment. The award is not set aside for a specific small business category. Boston University has an extensive track record of securing federal contracts and grants for advanced research across scientific domains, including space exploration, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and technological innovation.
Description
The goal of the proposed study is to determine what plasma and magnetic field conditions dominantly control whistler-mode wave growths in the earth s magnetosphere. Specifically, the proposed work will address the following three science questions: Q1: how much do cold plasma affect whistler-mode wave growth? Q2: how much do modulations of cold plasma, hot plasma, and magnetic field contribute to whistler-mode wave growth? Q3: in what solar wind and geomagnetic conditions and spatial regions do the plasma and magnetic field parameters become important for whistler-mode wave growth? The proposed work will address the fundamental properties of plasma waves in the earth s magnetosphere. Thus, the proposed work is relevant to one of the objectives of NASA s heliophysics research program explore and characterize the physical processes in the space environment from the sun to the heliopause and throughout the universe.
