About this award

This is a $69,793.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Morgan State University, a historically Black university in Baltimore, Maryland. The grant funds research to evaluate planetary boundary layer heights (PBLH) retrieved from GeoOptics Level 2 refractivity profiles and compare them to PBLH estimates from other radio occultation (RO) data products like COSMIC-2, KOMPSAT-5, and Spire. The research will also investigate sampling biases due to RO penetration variability, with a focus on extratropical regions, to determine if GeoOptics' improved penetration capability and enhanced low-altitude sampling can benefit PBLH studies. As a prime federal contractor, Morgan State University has previously provided research, engineering, and technical services to NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy under various grant and contract awards.

Description

This proposal seeks to evaluate PBL heights retrieved using geooptics level 2 refractivity profiles by (a) comparing against pblh estimates derived similarly from other contemporary RO data products such as cosmic-2, kompsat-5, and spire that offer different penetration capabilities, and (b) performing a detailed investigation of the sampling bias due to RO penetration variability, focusing on extratropical regions to help whether the seemingly improved penetration capability and enhanced low-altitude sampling offered by geooptics can indeed be beneficial for PBL studies.
