About this award

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has been awarded a $47,436.08 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to host a joint workshop focused on the CYGNSS and TROPICS satellite missions. The workshop will engage user communities and enable cross-cutting science and applications across weather, climate, and disaster-related focus areas. It will also explore opportunities to extend the use of CYGNSS and TROPICS data to additional program areas such as energy, ocean, water resources, and ecological forecasting. This grant does not have a set-aside designation. The University of Miami's Tritium Laboratory, which specializes in low-level tritium analysis, is a key subcontractor supporting RSMAS's federal research activities. RSMAS also holds an indefinite delivery vehicle (IDV) contract worth up to $1.128 million with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to provide these specialized tritium analysis services on an as-needed basis.

Description

The proposed joint NASA cygnss-tropics workshop will engage user communities and enable science across the applied science focus areas of weather and climate and disasters, including breakout sessions to further highlight and discuss applications. In addition, the topics discussed will provide opportunities for collaborative discussions extending cygnss and tropics to future program areas in energy, ocean, water resources, and ecological forecasting. The breakout sessions are designed to discuss synergistic topics for cygnss and tropics, using existing cygnss observations together with tropics pathfinder data. The workshop will also identify potentially new application areas where cygnss and tropics data could be used for applied research, operational decision making, and within the private and commercial industries.
