About this award

This is a $143,551.05 federal grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Space Science Institute, a nonprofit research organization based in Boulder, Colorado. The goal of the project is to develop an adaptive hybrid computational model that combines kinetic ion and fluid electron descriptions to enable more detailed simulations of turbulent solar wind conditions and their impacts on the Earth's magnetosphere. The model will be integrated with global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) codes at the NASA Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) to support research on the effects of turbulent foreshock conditions on magnetospheric dynamics during space weather events. The grant does not have a set-aside designation and will fund the research and development work to be performed by the Space Science Institute with potential collaboration from partners such as the University of California, UCLA, and the University of Michigan.

Description

The goal of this project is to provide an adaptive hybrid model (kinetic ION/fluid electron) that goes beyond fluid description to the research community through ccmc. The adaptive hybrid code hypers will feed directly into global MHD codes available at the ccmc to recreate turbulent foreshock conditions in global MHD simulations at ccmc. The project will empower ccmc science users to study impacts of turbulent foreshock conditions on global magnetosphere dynamics during storms and substorms. Select several solar wind conditions will be utilized as 3-dimentional test cases to address reconnection, turbulence on multiple scales including kinetic turbulence, kinetic alfven waves, ION cyclotron waves, drift waves, and mirror mode. All of these require more than fluid codes can contribute. Also, ability to utilize selected input conditions will enable ccmc and its users to investigate the impact of different models of applied resistivity and mesh resolution on reconnection and turbulence. Lastly, the project will enable the visualization of 3D hypers output through the ccmc web-based system. The goal of this project is to provide research community through ccmc the 3 dimensional (3D) adaptive hybrid (kinetic ION/fluid electron) code hypers, to enable ccmc and its users to investigate the impact of non-fluid effects on gmagnetosphere dynamics, and to feed 3D hypers output directly into global MHD codes available at the ccmc.
