About this award
This federal contract award to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) covers the full suite of Standard NASA S-NPP and JPSS-1 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) active fire and burned products. The $789,838.00 grant is for research and development, with no set-aside designation. UMD, a state-controlled institution of higher learning, will provide these VIIRS data products to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The award is associated with a larger, open-ended Other Transaction (OT) Indefinite Delivery Vehicle (IDV) contract between UMD and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), focused on developing domain-agnostic systems with symbolic reasoning capabilities centered on synthetic quantum nanostructures. This IDV demonstrates UMD's extensive technical capabilities across diverse research areas supporting national security and innovation.
Description
This proposal covers NASA's full suite of standard s-NPP and jpss-1 viirs active fire and burned products, combined into a single effort. The viirs active fire products consist of (i) level-2 (swath) active fire products (VNP14 and VNP14IMG), which identify individual 375-m and 750-m swath pixels that contain one or more actively burning fires at the time of the satellite overpass, with spatially explicit cloud and other quality information, and which are used to generate the higher-level active fire products, (II).level-2G active fire products (VNP14GD and VNP14GN), that are daily gridded multi-observation intermediate products, (III) level-3 daily gridded composite active fire products (VNP14A1 and VNP14IMGA1), and (IV) a global monthly active fire location summary product (VNP14IMGML) which defines the geographic coordinates, fire radiative power, and individual viirs fire pixel attributes, in a single global monthly text file. The viirs burned area products consist of (i) the level-3 burned area product (VNP64A1), which maps the date of burn for each 500-m grid cell to the nearest day on a monthly basis, and (II) the monthly 0.25O climate modeling grid (CMG) burned area product (VNP64CMQ).
