About this award
This $173,756.00 federal grant award to Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will fund preliminary design work and small-scale prototyping for the handling and delivery of regolith (lunar soil) to a molten regolith electrolysis reactor. The project involves literature reviews, trade studies, and test device designs to support low-gravity and vacuum testing of regolith handling approaches. The work will provide data and analyses to inform future experimental activities in simulated lunar environments. This grant award is not associated with a larger contract vehicle and does not have a set-aside designation. As a public research university with extensive experience supporting federal agencies in STEM-related research and development, Michigan Tech is well-positioned to execute this critical early-stage work for NASA's lunar resource utilization efforts.
Description
The proposed project investigates preliminary designs of hardware and experiments for low g / vacuum testing of regolith handling for regolith delivery to a molten regolith electrolysis reactor melt. The tasks of the project are as follows: a) perform literature search on vacuum and low g granular flow b) support and provide input to trade of options for gravity-assisted and gravity independent solutions for regolith feed to reactor, bed preparation, mass additions to melt. C) support and provide input to preliminary design of test devices for later experimental work (FY22) in low g test platforms (parabolic aircraft, micro-g test facility, suborbital flights.) d) provide DOE analysis input using DOE software (minitab) to define observations, measurements, test matrix etc. E) create and make small bench scale regolith transfer prototypes to do quick evaluation of concept testing.
