About this award
This federal contract award, valued at $74,311.00, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), a renowned non-profit research institution. The contract supports a one-year project led by Dr. Jackie Faherty to provide expertise in the discovery and characterization of brown dwarfs. The project involves acquiring spectroscopic data on targets using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), reducing the data, and supervising a publication on a new collection of cold, co-moving brown dwarf benchmarks. Dr. Faherty will also supervise the maintenance and enhancement of the WISEView visualization tool developed by citizen scientist Dan Caselden. This contract does not have a set-aside designation, reflecting AMNH's status as a large non-profit research organization. AMNH has a long history of receiving both federal contract and grant awards from NASA and other science-focused agencies to support a wide range of research, educational, and public outreach initiatives.
Description
CO-i DR. Jackie faherty shall provide her expertise in brown dwarf discovery and characterization to the proposed program. She has currently applied for and won several nights on NASA s irtf facility in order to follow-up on citizen scientist discoveries of cold brown dwarfs CO-moving with gaia primary STARS. During this one-year project faherty will acquire spectroscopic data on targets using the irtf, reduce data, and supervise a publication that examines the new collection of cold CO-moving benchmarks. Faherty will be supervising undergraduate austin rothermich and postdoctoral fellow daniella bardalez gagliuffi on the ingestion and analysis of the new backyard worlds benchmarks to the larger sample of all known brown dwarf CO-moving systems. Faherty will also supervise the maintenance of the wiseview visualization tool developed by citizen scientist DAN caselden. For a one-year period faherty will work with caselden to make the cloud computing and cloud storage facilities of wiseview efficient.
