About this award
This is a $763,170 grant awarded to the Regents of the University of Michigan by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to characterize the radiation environment due to solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays, and the variability of this environment affected by the sun. The two principal science objectives are to quantify the relationship between extreme solar energetic particle events and Forbush decreases, and the anisotropy of the galactic cosmic rays observed at Earth, as well as to identify the mechanisms of solar energetic particle acceleration and their energy spectrum and anisotropy. The grant has a period of performance ending on September 1, 2025. No set-aside was used for this award.
Description
The aim of the proposed investigation is to characterize the radiation environment due to solar energetic particles (seps) and galactic cosmic rays (gcrs), and the variability of this environment affected by the sun. The two principle science objectives of this study are 1) quantification of the relationship between extreme SEP events and forbush decrease, and anisotropy of the cgrs observed at earth, and 2) identification of the mechanism of SEP acceleration and their energy spectrum and anisotropy.
