About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $965,982.00, was granted to the University of Central Florida (UCF) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). UCF will serve as the lead organization and coordinate with Masten Space Systems to advance a prototype instrument for measuring particle densities and sizes in rocket plumes during landing. The project will integrate the instrument with Masten Space Systems' lander system and test camera systems optimized for landing and instrument requirements. UCF researchers will also analyze data collected from the instrument and potential ancillary data on erosion and plume effects. This award is not associated with any set-aside designation and is funded through a research grant with a completion date of December 31, 2023.

Description

UCF will serve as lead organization for the overall project and will coordinate with masten space systems. DR. Metzger will serve as PI. DR. S dove and metzger will provide the instrument to be used to measure particle densities and sizes in the plumes. A prototype instrument will be advanced through this proposal, and the existing hardware will be modified to match measurement requirements and specifications for lander integration. They will work with masten space systems (MSS) a) as science and engineering subject matter experts to design flight and testing parameters b) to integrate the prototype instrument with the MSS lander system and c) to identify and test camera systems that are optimized for landing and instrument requirements. Additionally, they will lead the analysis on data that is collected from the instrument, and potential ancillary data about erosion and plume effects generated by the landing tests.
