About this award
This federal contract award, with ID 80NSSC20K1038, was issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Massachusetts (UMass) as the prime contractor. The $465,386.72 grant is for research on interfacial phenomena and thermal properties of high-temperature melts, led by Principal Investigator Professor Hyers.
The scope of work includes extending a numerical model to provide a 3-D understanding of the influence of experimental parameters on interfacial tension measurements conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) using the Electrostatic Levitation Facility. UMass will also design, direct, and analyze related experiments at the Marshall Space Flight Center. This research supports NASA's space exploration priorities. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
Description
The scope of work for the umass group is detailed in the jaxa proposal, interfacial phenomena and thermal properties of high-temperature melts, m. Watanabe, PI. The original proposal (in japanese) and a machine translation are attached for reference. Our proposed scope of work is summarized below. 1. Extend present numerical model supporting interfacial tension measurement experiments using the ISS-ELF and interpretation of the experimental data downloaded from the ISS to 3-d. The full three-dimensional model will provide a systematic understanding on the influence of experimental parameters on the measured interfacial tension. 2. Apply the model to different experimental parameters. These parameters include the initial amplitude of oscillation, the core-shell radii ratio, the phase difference of core and shell oscillation and sample rotation. 3. Design, direct, and analyze experiments to be conducted in the msfc electrostatic levitation facility, as required. Prof. Hyers is the principal investigator. He will maintain overall responsibility for the project. Assisted by the postdoc in years 2-5, he will also contribute to the modeling efforts led by prof. LEE at iowa state. These efforts are described in the statement of work for the subaward.
