About this award

This federal contract award, valued at $73,720.00, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Montana State University (MSU) for the continuation of the MAX Millennium Program. The MAX Millennium Program was established in 1999 to advance the understanding of particle acceleration and explosive energy release in solar flares through a combination of observations, data analysis, and theory. Under this contract, MSU will continue to identify and communicate optimal observing targets and campaigns across missions and observatories, host a searchable preprint archive, and distribute the latest research results, scientific updates, software updates, and meeting announcements to the worldwide solar and heliospheric community. The contract has a performance period from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2024, and is not designated as a set-aside award.

Description

The max millennium program was started in 1999 by the PI team for the ramaty high energy solar spectroscopic imager (rhessi), a NASA smex mission launched in february 2002, at the peak of solar cycle 23. The primary goal of the program is to advance our understanding of particle acceleration and explosive energy release in solar flares through a combination of coordinated observations, data analysis, and theory. The core operations of the program evolved into identifying and communicating optimal observing targets and campaigns across missions and observatories, hosting a searchable preprint archive, and pushing a weekly newsletter to rapidly distribute the latest research results, scientific nuggets, software updates, and meeting announcements to the world-wide solar and heliospheric community. For two decades, the international solar activity community has participated in the program, with the guidance of the max millennium chief observers and active members of the community, to whom the max millennium mailing lists have provided a forum.
