About this award

This federal contract award ID 80NSSC20K0688 was issued by the Shared Services Center, a civilian agency, to The Regents of the University of Colorado (CU), doing business as the University of Colorado. The $524,469.08 grant supports research on the terrestrial bow shock, which is the boundary between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. This fundamental research aims to understand the acceleration of ions and electrons in collision-less plasmas, which is relevant to solar, planetary, and astrophysical processes. The award does not have a set-aside designation, indicating CU's competitive capabilities across scientific and technological domains. In addition to this contract, CU holds a $1 million Other Transaction Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDV) agreement with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for advanced research in atomic-scale thermal transport models for microelectronic systems, further demonstrating the university's expertise in high-risk, high-reward technological development.

Description

The terrestrial BOW shock is the boundary between the supersonic solar wind and the terrestrial magnetosphere and converts the kinetic energy of the solar wind into thermal energy, allowing the flow to become subsonic and move past the magnetosphere. Shocks are an important acceleration site for ions and electrons in collision less plasmas and responsible for much of the particle acceleration in solar, planetary, and astrophysical regions. One of the fundamental outstanding questions of ION acceleration at the quasi-parallel BOW shock is which portion of solar wind ions are ultimately selected into the seed population that is subsequently accelerated to high energies. In addition, composition measurements indicate that the ratio of the energetic to solar wind he++ flux is about a factor of 2 larger than the same flux ratio for h+ when the two ION distributions are compared at equal energy per charge.
