About this award
This federal contract award, valued at $331,702.00, was issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Northern Arizona University (NAU) to perform a visible and near-infrared spectroscopic survey of candidate red asteroids in the middle and outer main asteroid belt. The goal is to identify potential Trojan-like outer solar system material that could provide insights into the early solar system's giant planet migration. This is a grant for research, with no set-aside designation. NAU, a public research university and Hispanic-Serving Institution, has extensive capabilities in planetary science, environmental monitoring, and STEM education research supported by various federal agencies. This award aligns with NASA's scientific goals of understanding the formation and evolution of the solar system.
Description
We propose to perform a visible and near-infrared spectroscopic survey of candidate red asteroids in the middle and outer main belt to identify potential trojan-like outer solar system material. We used spectrophotometry from the sloan digital sky survey (sdss) moving object catalog (MOC) to select candidate asteroids with slopes in excess of the average "red" trojan spectral slope. We will investigate the distribution of these red objects throughout the main belt in order to provide further constraints on dynamical models of giant planet migration in the early solar system. The presence or absence of these red objects will inform our understanding of what material was transported into the main belt.
